With a season of uncertainty and looking at every possible way to boost your immune system, there's no wonder scientists are looking more closely at the benefits of hemp. Experts from the University of Nebraska and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute are highly recommending that scientist study the anti-inflammatory properties of hemp and how it may affect different lung complications caused by COVID-19.
A recent peer-reviewed article by Brain, Behavior and Immunity asks the question about the potential impacts and benefits on adding hemp based substances to the anti-viral therapy for coronavirus patients. As we have learned, the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV2) has caused a pandemic worldwide and has now taken the lives of over 150,000 United States citizens with many more hospitalized. While the research and general knowledge on the coronavirus is still very limited, alternative and complimentary therapies are being reviewed.
The acute infection of COVID-19 produces a cytokine superstorm (an inflammatory response) that causes cough, fever, muscle pain and interstitial pneumonia. Several medications are currently being tested, including Tocilizumab, which resulted in lung consolidation clearance in 90% of the 21 treated patients. However, adverse side effects include pancreatitis and hypertriglyceridemia. This peer-reviewed article goes on to explain how more alternative therapies are needed for the treatment of COVID-19, like hemp based products.
The article talks about current research studies on hemp are "well tolerated pharmacologically even after treatments of up to 1500 mg/day for two weeks in both animals and humans." 1500mg/day is a lot of hemp! That is almost 100 times what any well-known, hemp based product company would recommend to take. None the less, very interesting peer-reviewed article. Even though we do not have any solid research conclusions on the effects of hemp and COVID-19, it is good to see that scientists are open to the benefits of hemp and boosting the immune system. As always, consult your health care professional before adding hemp to your daily routine. Stay safe and healthy!
