Diabetes and hemp: what is the correlation?

Diabetes is a disease in which the body's ability to produce or respond to insulin is impaired. Diabetes, therefor, can cause abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Overtime, diabetes can cause inflammation of different organs in the body, including the eyes, kidneys, joints and skin. Since hemp based products have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, hemp based products may have a role in reducing inflammation caused by the negative effects of diabetes.

A recent peer-reviewed article by G Gruden, et al, reviews the role that hemp based products have in reducing inflammation caused by diabetes. The article looks at the complications caused by diabetes, and how hemp based products play a role in balancing the endocannibinoid system (ECS). "Compelling evidence from preclinical studies indicates that the ECS also influences diabetes‐induced oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis and subsequent tissue injury in target organs for diabetic complications." This article looks at the therapeutic benefits on hemp based products and the effects that the endocannibinoid system has on the pathogenesis of diabetes and the diabetic microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy) and cardiovascular complications.

The article looks deeper into the effects of hemp based products and their role with CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 and CB2 receptors are found throughout the human body. CB1 receptors are expressed at very high levels in the central nervous system (CNS), and CB2 receptors are mainly found in the immune, inflammatory, haematopoietic cells and other peripheral areas of the body. In conclusion, this peer-reviewed article found that "CB1 receptor blockade is beneficial in animal models of obesity and metabolic syndrome, and these findings have been confirmed in humans." When they reviewed studies related to the effects of hemp based products on the CB2 receptors, the conclusion was also positive. CB2 receptors were shown to help reduce inflammation, oxidative stress and fibrogenesis. In other words, hemp based products have been shown in multiple research studies to help with a variety of symptoms caused by diabetes and the complications that arise from the disease.

So how can one with diabetes take advantage of the benefits of hemp based products? The first step is to talk with your professional health care provider before adding anything new to your daily routine. Second, make sure you do the research on a high quality hemp based product source. Third, once you find that source, be consistent with taking hemp based products.
